So here's an explanation of how the board is laid out and as a result how it functions.
SaltyUtes is built on a framework produced by ProBoards. Oregon State and San Diego State free forums use a pretty out of the box ProBoards format. There are some things that just have to be accepted with a his format. 1) it is a forum rather than Message Board format which means it doesn't support the kind of threaded View seen on Utefans. 2) Even though the desktop site is much better, you can't inactivate the mobile interface. The mobile interface will however go away in the next update (v6).
What this product does well is organize content and content availability. The content here is organized into 5 forums: Utah Sports, Off Topic (entertainment), Site Feedback, Pro Sports, and Cesspool (Religion, politics, BYU, etc). Cesspool is a default hidden category. The forums (minus Cesspool) are quicklinked in the top toolbar.
Within each forum are several Labels which can be applied to threads, with no limit on the number off labels that can be applied to a given thread. The labels can then be used to filter the posts in a given forum. These filtered views are linked in the sidebar icons. The cesspool links are also in the sidebar. Labels must be selected from the actions dropdown by the thread initiator before or after posting the thread.
The final navigating feature is that users will be notified of activity in participated threads using the Participated button above the sidebar.
That's a brief rundown of how it works here.
